The Miami Freedom Tower is one of the most recognizable historic landmarks in South Florida. Originally constructed in 1925, the tower has served many purposes throughout its history and today stands as an important cultural and historical monument in downtown Miami.
Due to its coastal location and nearly century-old reinforced concrete construction, portions of the structure had experienced deterioration related to corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel. Chloride exposure from the marine environment had penetrated the concrete over time, initiating corrosion that led to cracking, spalling, and localized deterioration in several areas of the building.
Given the historic significance of the structure, repairs required corrosion mitigation systems that could provide long-term protection while preserving the architectural integrity of the building.
NOCO was engaged to design and supply multiple cathodic protection systems tailored to the specific conditions of different areas within the structure.
Within the historic mural room, the ZEBRA impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system was selected. This discreet, conductive paint anode system allows for effective corrosion mitigation while minimizing visual impact in architecturally sensitive spaces.
In tiled areas of the structure, DuoGuard hybrid anodes were installed to provide an initial impressed current phase followed by long-term galvanic protection, helping to mitigate ongoing corrosion activity within the reinforced concrete.
For the underside of structural slabs, a Cassette ICCP system was implemented. This system provides distributed impressed current protection across larger concrete surfaces and is well suited for overhead applications.
